Australian National A Grade Concert Band Champions!

Unley Concert Band is proud to announce that they are the 2016 A Grade Concert Band National Champions!

The band performed admirably in the contest at the Starplex Hewitson Theatre, Gawler, on Saturday night, winning both the Test Piece Flourishes and Meditations on a Renaissance Theme by Michael Gandolfi and Own Choice section with their selection Philip Sparke’s Year of the Dragon of the A Grade Concert Band section by a clear margin to claim victory.

The contest was extremely close, with only 4 points separating UCB and the formidable reigning champions, North West Wind Ensemble, in the final aggregate score. This is an amazing achievement for the Double Blues, 12 years in the making!

The final scores were:

North West Wind Ensemble: Hymn  44/50, Test Piece 184/200, Own Choice 183/200, March 46/50 = 457/500

Unley Concert Band: Hymn (In Paths of Truth and Grace) – 43/50, Test Piece 188/200, Own Choice 186/200, March (Florentiner March) 44/50 = 461/500

The band was also successful in the Parade of Bands on Saturday morning, claiming the Concert Band section, making this the band’s 5th consecutive National title. The band played Michael Jackson’s Thriller, complete with a ‘zombiefied’ change of direction which was a big hit with the crowd in Gawler. Thanks to Jeff Hale for his continued efforts as our drum major and congratulations to him for winning the Champion Drum Major for Concert Bands. 12891035_10209722877935708_8189946881356376360_o
