The Unley Concert Band wishes to advise the departure of our Musical Director, Professor Stephen Boyle, at the end of 2017.

Stephen has made an immense contribution to both the culture and musical achievements of the band during his 4 years at the helm, including our memorable 2016 A Grade Nationals Triumph. Closer to home, we will sorely miss his surprising costume changes, dynamic dance moves, and Wednesday night direct flights to rehearsal, as well as the enthusiasm, knowledge and belief....

Unley have successfully defended their A Grade title at the South Australian Band Championships today with a convincing performance at Immanuel College.

Final scores were:

Hymn (Amazing Grace – Frank Ticheli) – 43/50

Test Piece (Symphony no 3 “Slavyanskaya” by Boris Kozhevnikov) – 95/100

March (Stars and Stripes Forever – JP Sousa) – 48.5/50

On Saturday 17 June, UCB celebrated its 20th anniversary with a gala concert at Concordia College Chapel to a supportive and enthusiastic crowd.

The program included many old favourites such as:

    Unley Concert Band joined forces with Kensington and Norwood Brass last Saturday for a concert in preparation for the upcoming Australian National Band Championships at St Peters’ Girls School Performing Arts Centre. K & N Brass, under the baton of Philip Paine, opened the concert with a presentation of their A Grade Brass program, including the test work, Harrison’s Dream.

    Unley will be joining forces with Kensington & Norwood Brass and Payneham City Concert Band to present a  Pre-Nationals concert on Saturday 1 April 2017 at 2pm at St Peters’ Girls School Arts Centre.

      Just about everybody has been touched in some way by cancer – family members, work colleagues, friends, maybe even themselves… The work of the Cancer Council and other cancer research foundations is vital in understanding and helping to find a cure for the disease.

    Unley Concert Band recently held a spooktacular Halloween cabaret on Friday 30th October at the Goodwood Community Centre. Entitled “Monsters and Magic”, the room was full of draculas, witches, skeletons, a mummy and other ghostly creatures, dressed up for the occasion.

    Unley Concert Band is the State Champion A Grade Concert Band once again after a great performance at the South Australian Band Championships, held at Trinity College Gawler last weekend. The band performed admirably in all sections of the on-stage competition, receiving scores of 44, 93, 45 (Total 182/200) for their hymn selection The King of Love My Shepherd Is, the own choice major work Godzilla Eats Las Vegas and march selection Amparita Roca.     Unley will be competing in Open A Grade once again at the South Australian Band Championships on Saturday 29 August at Trinity College Senior College, Gawler. The contest, over two days, will consist of performances from concert and brass bands battling it out in their respective grades, as well as solo and ensemble sections for both brass and woodwind, plus the annual Parade of Bands.     UCB had a successful concert on Saturday 25 July entitled “Folk Songs and Dances” at the Fullarton Park Community Centre. The band opened the concert to an appreciative crowd on a rather chilly, damp night with a lively rendition of Leonard Bernsteins ‘Overture to Candide’, as well as performing many well-known standard works in the concert band repertoire such as Vaughan Williams’ English Folk Song Suite, Adam Gorb’s Yiddish Dances and the final movement....

    After a very successful Jazz Cabaret in May, UCB is now busy preparing for their next concert, to be presented on Saturday 25 July at 7:30pm at the Fullarton Park Community Centre Banquet Hall. The concert will consist of folk songs and dances from around the world, including well known wind band works.

Unley Concert Band will being holding a Pre-Nationals concert on Sunday 22 March at 5:30pm at the Unley Town Hall.

Entry is by donation at the door and the programme will feature the band’s hymn, test piece, own choice work and stage march for the upcoming National championships at Easter in Sydney, musically directed by Stephen Boyle. The concert will also feature some of our soloists and small ensembles who will be competing in the solo and party events across the Nationals weekend.

It is full steam ahead for the Double Blues in the next two months as the band gears up for its tenth Australian National Band Championships, this year to be held at the Seymour Centre in Sydney on 3-6 April.

The band will be competing in the Open A Grade Concert Band division for the fifth time on Saturday 4 April. The championships are a special one in 2015 as they will be celebrating the centenary of ANZAC. As a result, the test selections for Open A-D grade in both brass and concert....

Unley Concert Band recently held their annual Awards Night on Wednesday 26th November.

The band congratulates bass clarinet player Anna Day on receiving the 2014 Claude Hale Memorial Bandsperson of the Year award for her dedication and service to the band over the past decade. The Claude Hale Memorial award was established in 2012 in memory of long time UCB member and SABA life member Claude Hale who demonstrated all the qualities that the band appreciates in its members.

UCB will be rounding off its Christmas celebrations at the Unley Memorial Gardens rotunda on Sunday 14th December when it performs at the Carols at the Rotunda event, held by the Rotary Club of Unley and the City of Unley. The carols event, a regular for the Unley area, will feature Mat Noble as guest vocalist as well as the Australian Girls Choir, as well as performances by the Double Blues. Unley Concert Band performed a concert with Mitcham City Brass last Sunday 12th October at Scotch College. The concert, entitled “All Hands on Deck” was well received by the audience who were treated to a set from both bands, followed by a massed band performance of two marches The Middy and On The Quarterdeck, and a ten minute work for both concert and brass band, The Battle of Trafalgar, commemorating the 209th anniversary of the battle, complete with....

The Double Blues have taken out the South Australian A Grade Concert Band title once again at the South Australian Band Championships this weekend. In a performance to be proud of, the band performed the hymn Ave Maria (arr. Frank Ticheli) which the adjudicator described as superb, the own choice major work ‘Second Suite for Band’ by Alfred Reed and the much loved Eric Coates march ‘The Dambusters’ .     Unley Concert Band will be appearing at the Strathalbyn Band Festival on Sunday 10th August at 11:30am. This long running popular event, organised by the Strathalbyn Concert Band, involves almost two dozen brass and concert bands around the South Australian metropolitan area each performing 30min entertainment programs and is a great day out for banding. Come along and support UCB in their performance at the Strathalbyn Town Hall.

    Unley Concert Band will take a trip South of the Border, down Mexico way on Sunday 15th June at 2pm at Concordia College Chapel in a concert that celebrates the toe-tapping, driving Latin rhythms of Central and South America.

    Everything you love about South America, we have it:  ponchos, sombreros, salsa, tequila, cactuses, burritos, churros, tangos, hat dances, swashbuckling Latin swordsmen, margaritas, maracas…. you name it!

    UCB has just returned from a very successful band camp at Strathalbyn to prepare for National Band Championships in Brisbane at Easter. The weekend consisted of intensive rehearsals for both the onstage and marching competitions to be held at St Laurence’s College in South Brisbane and the centre of Brisbane on Saturday 19th April. The weekend was a resounding success and we look forward to band camp potentially being made an annual event.

    The first was a pre-race marching display on the track at Stage 4 of the Tour Down Under on King William Road, Unley. The band played such popular tunes as YMCA, Thriller, The Final Countdown, Viva La Vida and The Imperial March. Thank you to Al Kidney, Jaclyn Hale and Andreas Pretterhofer for marching with the band on key instruments.

    UCB is already busy with preparations for the Australian National Band Championships, to be held this year at Easter in Brisbane. Queensland is the only state the band has yet to visit for the Nationals and the band is excited to be competing in Open A Grade for the fourth year, this time under the direction of new Music Director, Dr Stephen Boyle, on Saturday 19th April 2014. UCB is steadily heading for the end of another busy year for the Double Blues.

After welcoming our new Music Director with a great “Slip Into Spring” concert at Concordia College, the band has begun initial preparations for the Australian National Band Championships which will be held at Easter 2014 in sunny Brisbane. The band plans, once again, to contest the Open A Grade Concert section.

The state’s top A Grade community band, Unley Concert Band, has appointed Dr Stephen Boyle as its new Musical Director.

Stephen is the band’s third Musical Director since it was formed in 1997 and he brings experience both as a professional musician and with community music.

A graduate of the University of Adelaide, Stephen worked as a professional musician for a number of years and has performed with international....

 

Unley Concert Band will be performing a concert of popular concert and wind band works on Saturday 19th October at Concordia College Chapel, 45 Cheltenham Street, Highgate. The band, in this lovely tiered auditorium, will be performing works by Alfred Reed, Reinhold Gliere, Percy Grainger and Frank Erickson as well as some well known popular tunes from the movies. The band will be under the direction of new musical director Dr Stephen Boyle.

In July, Unley Concert Band sadly farewelled long-time musical director Dr Kevin Cameron after nearly thirteen years of service to the band.

Kevin has received a sought-after senior teaching position at Geelong Grammar School in Victoria and relocated there in August.

Kevin was appointed Music Director of the band in 2001, four years after the band’s inception, and has been instrumental in developing Unley Concert Band into the successful band it is today. Under Kevin’s baton,....

The band will be led by acclaimed guest conductor Robert Hower in the Open A Grade Concert Section to be held at The Forge Performing Arts Centre in the Marryatville High School grounds on Saturday 24th Aug at midday.

    The Double Blues will also be competing in the Parade of Bands on Sunday afternoon, hoping to defend their 2012 marching title.

    On Saturday 22nd June, Unley Concert Band presented a night of Disney classics to an appreciative cabaret audience at the Dom Polski Centre. The audience came out in droves, many in costume, the room colourful with Disney princesses, Disney villains, cartoon creatures and even a dalmatian!
