July News

UCB had a successful concert on Saturday 25 July entitled “Folk Songs and Dances” at the Fullarton Park Community Centre. The band opened the concert to an appreciative crowd on a rather chilly, damp night with a lively rendition of Leonard Bernsteins ‘Overture to Candide’, as well as performing many well-known standard works in the concert band repertoire such as Vaughan Williams’ English Folk Song Suite, Adam Gorb’s Yiddish Dances and the final movement of Alfred Reed’s Armenian Dances Part 2. All the pieces had a folk dance/song theme from all around the world.

Highlights of the evening were the world premiere of band member Andrew Heuzenroeder’s march “The Piping Shrike” (sure to become a regularly performed march for the band), a performance of band member Nicola Kubenk’s chamber work “Dance O’ The Leprechauns” (written for flute, clarinet, bass clarinet, alto saxophone and three percussionists) and a beautiful rendition of Samuel Hazo’s Perthshire Majesty featuring Sarah Byron on soprano saxophone.
