It is full steam ahead for the Double Blues in the next two months as the band gears up for its tenth Australian National Band Championships, this year to be held at the Seymour Centre in Sydney on 3-6 April.
The band will be competing in the Open A Grade Concert Band division for the fifth time on Saturday 4 April. The championships are a special one in 2015 as they will be celebrating the centenary of ANZAC. As a result, the test selections for Open A-D grade in both brass and concert band sections are commissioned works by Australian composers in the spirit of ANZAC day. UCB will also be entering a number of soloists and ensembles in the solo/party competition on Monday 6th April.
To prepare for the big weekend in April, the band will travel to Victor Harbor in a few weeks’ time for another band camp weekend. The weekend will consist of intensive rehearsals, sectionals and marching practice to prepare the band not only for the on-stage events, but for our drum major Jeff Hale to drill our champion marching band to defend our Open A Grade Concert marching title for the fifth year running in the Parade of Bands. Last year’s camp in Strathalbyn was a fun one that not only assisted in the band’s performance at the Nationals but fostered a great social atmosphere amongst our members.
If you would like to hear Unley Concert Band play their test piece, own choice selection, stage march and hymn (and much more!) before the band heads off to NSW at Easter, the band will be holding a Pre-Nationals concert in the early evening of Sunday 22 March. Lock it in your diaries! More details on the Pre-Nationals concert to come!
