October/November News from the Double Blues

Unley Concert Band performed a concert with Mitcham City Brass last Sunday 12th October at Scotch College. The concert, entitled “All Hands on Deck” was well received by the audience who were treated to a set from both bands, followed by a massed band performance of two marches The Middy and On The Quarterdeck, and a ten minute work for both concert and brass band, The Battle of Trafalgar, commemorating the 209th anniversary of the battle, complete with spirited narration & gunshots! In the second half of the programme, UCB performed a set of sea and naval inspired works such as Vaughan-Williams’ Sea Songs, Molly on the Shore by Percy Grainger, Hands Across The Sea by JP Sousa and the beautiful October by Eric Whitacre. Many thanks to Andreas Pretterhofer for leading the band for this concert and to Steven Packer and Mitcham City Brass for the opportunity to perform with them.

Unley Concert Band is now busy preparing for the busy Christmas pageant season. The band will be performing in five pageants this year, under the direction of 2014 SA Champion Drum Major, Jeff Hale.

  • The Credit Union Christmas Pageant (Saturday 8th November 2014 at 10am)
  • Glenelg Christmas Pageant (Sunday 16th November 2014 at 9:30am)
  • Norwood Christmas Pageant (Saturday 22nd November 2014 at 9:30am)
  • Blackwood Christmas Pageant (Friday 5th December 2014 at 6:30pm)
  • Mount Barker Christmas Pageant (Saturday 6th December 2014 at 10am)

The band will also play for the Remembrance Day service at the Unley War Memorial on Tuesday 11th November at 10:30am. This is an important event for the City of Unley and the local RSLs and UCB is always proud to be able to contribute to the commemoration of those who made the supreme sacrifice.

Unley Concert Band will finish the year with the Unley Carols in the Rotunda on Sunday 14th December 2014. The event, which was originated by the band in the early 2000s, is a popular one with the Unley and surrounding community and UCB is happy to be able to perform once again at the event. All welcome to this free event!

Watch this space for the Double Blues’ soon to be announced 2015 concert calendar! Many exciting events and performances on the horizon for the band, including a visit to Sydney for the 2015 Nationals!
