Unley Concert Band members are hard at work with last minute preparations for the Australian National Band Championships to be held next weekend (Easter) in Perth. The venue, the lovely Winthrop Hall at the University of Western Australia, should be a first class venue for the band’s 60+ players. It is the first time since 1979 that the championships have been held in Perth so it is an exciting time to be entering the Nationals.
Unley will be contesting the A Grade Concert Band division on Saturday 30th March in the afternoon/evening against several interstate competitors and is looking forward to showcasing our band to the larger banding community. In addition to the on-stage events, the band will be looking to defend its 2010, 2011 and 2012 A Grade marching title in the Parade of Bands to be held in dynamic Northbridge. The band will be unveiling a specially choreographed routine on the corner of James and Parker Street, led by Drum Major Jeff Hale.
Finally, on Easter Monday 1st April, three quartets, three quintets and two dozen soloists from the band will perform in the solo and party events across several venues at the University. Several soloists will be defending 2011-2012 titles. If you are in WA and have a free day, come along and support our fantastic (and brave) soloists and ensembles for just a gold coin donation.
And don’t forget our concert with K & N Spring Gully Brass THIS SUNDAY at 2pm at the Unley Town Hall, featuring some of the works to be performed at this year’s Nationals!
