UCB celebrates 20 years!

On Saturday 17 June, UCB celebrated its 20th anniversary with a gala concert at Concordia College Chapel to a supportive and enthusiastic crowd.

The program included many old favourites such as:

  • Farandole from the L’Arlesienne Suite No 2, Irish Tune from County Derry, Shepherd’s Hey and Waltzing Matilda to celebrate the band’s history making trip to the Somme for Anzac Day and other commemorative services in 2009
  • O Magnum Mysterium – our winning hymn from the 2015 Nationals, dedicated to the late Jim Warren (UCB life member and inaugural Claude Hale Memorial Trophy for Bandsperson of the Year recipient).
  • The Piking Shrike march – written by Andrew Heuzenroeder, current member, for the band
  • Jackson 5 medley and Gangnam Style – favourites from the 2016 cabaret ‘Top of the Pops’
  • Irish Ayre For Winds (our weekly warm up piece for a decade!) and Instant Concert (an old favourite, played at lighning speed) featuring past players of the Unley Concert Band.

We were joined in the second half by our former Music Director, Dr Kevin Cameron, all the way from Geelong, who led the band in performances of some of the successful works the band performed under his capable helm:

Stars and Stripes Forever – John Philip Sousa (with piccolo soloist Dani Pedler), An Original Suite – Gordon Jacob, and Sing Sing Sing – Louis Prima, featuring Levi Whitworth on drums.

The band also included solos from two of our fantastic band members who have both recently won the National Woodwind Champion of Champions, Dominic Meehan (Concertango for Alto Sax, Jazz Trio and Symphonic Band – Luis Alarcon), and Samantha Webber (Artie Shaw Clarinet Concerto).

The foyer displays showed much of the band’s history, particularly in competitions, displaying Nationals photos and both State and National trophies from the band’s many years of contesting from C grade to the highest level, the Australian National A Grade title.

Many thanks to:

  • The UCB Committee, particularly Kate Flint, Brendan Kenny and Jeff Hale, for all their hard work in preparation for this event.
  • Dr Kevin Cameron (UCB Music Director 2001-2013) for attending from Victoria and conducting a large portion of our concert.
  • Our hard working, all dancing MD Dr. Stephen Boyle for your tireless efforts with the band in the lead up to this milestone
  • Shaun, Tracy and Abby Venning for helping with Front Of House; and Caroline for assisting with refreshments and a wonderful raffle donation.
  • Tanika Richards, Joe Mueller, Helena Maher and Jessica Kirby for stepping in to fill in on piano, bass guitar and clarinet respectively.
  • All band members who assisted in any way from donating raffle prizes to organising transportation of equipment, to providing items in the concert program. Your help does not go unnoticed.

(and anybody else who may have been forgotten from this list!)
