Unley Concert Band appoints new Musical Director

8 October 2013

The state’s top A Grade community band, Unley Concert Band, has appointed Dr Stephen Boyle as its new Musical Director.

Stephen is the band’s third Musical Director since it was formed in 1997 and he brings experience both as a professional musician and with community music.

A graduate of the University of Adelaide, Stephen worked as a professional musician for a number of years and has performed with international stars such as Liberace, Shirley Bassey and Jerry Lewis when they toured in Australia.

He was a member of the Band of the South Australia Police, including five years as Band Master, and has taught at the Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts. Stephen is currently the Academic Director and Deputy Head of UniSA College. He also has experience as Musical Director of the Adelaide Symphonic Wind Ensemble and the City of Brighton Concert Band.

“I had heard the Unley Concert Band perform and knew of their excellent reputation so when the Musical Director position became vacant I thought this was a great opportunity to get back into performing and work with a great band of musicians,” said Stephen.

Stephen believes community music is hugely important for both those who perform and also for those who get to experience a live music concert.

“Music is such a wonderful way to engage with the community at a range of different levels. We can perform the best works at the highest level for competition, and also entertain audiences in a community setting,” he said.

“Unley Concert Band also gives musicians the opportunity to work together as a team to produce something that is greater than the individual components.”

Stephen is excited to be preparing Unley Concert Band’s 2014 calendar of events which will include a series of concerts for the local community, the Yamaha National Band Championships in Brisbane at Easter and the South Australian Band Championships. Unley Concert Band will also continue participating in events across Adelaide as a marching band.

“I think it is important to always remember that we are part of the community,” said Stephen. “Unley Concert Band will strongly focus on making a great contribution to community life, and we’ll do this by performing great music at the highest level of professionalism while at the same time being approachable and closely linked to our audiences.”

Unley Concert Band will perform for the first time under Stephen’s direction in its Slip into Spring concert at Concordia College Chapel, 6.30pm on Saturday 19 October. Please click here for more information!
